The Magic of Tiki Bars: A Journey into the Exotic

Writer: Zoë WildgustZoë Wildgust

Tiki bars are more than just places to grab a drink—they’re escapes into a tropical paradise filled with exotic vibes, bamboo décor, and a touch of magic. Think Polynesian islands, complete with carved wooden totems, flickering torches & cocktails adorned with tiny umbrellas.

The concept of tiki bars originated in Los Angeles by Ernest Gantt better known as Donn Beach, a.k.a. Don the Beachcomber, who inspired by his travels in the South Pacific opened a tiki bar of the same name. The idea was a hit, and soon others joined in, most notably Trader Vic, who expanded the tiki trend globally. Enter Martin Denny, composer and pioneer of the exotica genre and setting the soundtrack for tiki bars and Polynesian-themed gatherings across America. His exotic, ambient music was perfectly timed, as it coincided with the post-WWII tiki craze that was sweeping the U.S. after soldiers returned with tales from the South Pacific. This genre played an essential role in the allure of tiki bars, creating a lush, sensory escape & marrying Polynesian art with Hawaiian flavours that make the magic of the tiki experience to this day.

We love the tiki experience. The taste of the drinks, the vibe of the spots. There are two ways to tiki. Grubby, dirty, divey tiki & upscale tiki. Here's our list of the best spots we've found from city to city.

Frankie’s Tiki Room in Las Vegas is a renowned tiki bar that combines classic Polynesian-inspired décor with the excitement and eccentricity of Las Vegas nightlife. Opened in 2008, designed by Bamboo Ben,  Frankie’s features an immersive setting with hand-carved tiki totems, bamboo furniture, and dim lighting. Frankie’s Tiki Room has become an institution for tiki fans, Las Vegas locals, and anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle for a while. Open 24/7, Frankie's blends classic tiki bar vibes, creative drinks, and a unique Las Vegas edge making it one of the most celebrated tiki bars in the country, and a must-visit for anyone seeking a slice of tropical paradise in the desert. Our favourite drink: Three Rum Scum.

Located in San Francisco, Smuggler’s Cove is a modern-day tiki classic, blending tiki bar elements with pirate lore. Created by rum expert Martin Cate, this bar is famous for its vast rum selection and intricately crafted cocktails. Over 400 rums on offer, a multi-level tiki-inspired space, and an inventive cocktail menu with a storytelling focus. More upscale than Frankie's, and a bigger building, Smuggler's sticks to the same style. Our favourite drink: Sidewinder's Fang.

Established in 1958, Tonga Hut in Los Angeles (North Hollywood) is California’s oldest operating tiki bar and retains much of its original charm. With authentic decor and an array of traditional tiki cocktails, Tonga Hut transports patrons back to the golden age of tiki. Classic tiki ambiance, historic authenticity, and a strong community of tiki lovers. Our favourite drink: Krackin' the Dole Whip.

San Diego's Grass Skirt is a modern tiki bar experience with a classic tiki vibe and contemporary flair. Located in Pacific Beach, this hidden gem feels like a true speakeasy—accessible only through a secret entrance behind a walk-in freezer door inside another restaurant, Good Time Poke. Once inside, guests are transported to a tropical hideaway adorned with bamboo, tiki carvings, dim lighting, and an ambiance that balances traditional tiki aesthetics with a modern twist. The cocktail menu at The Grass Skirt is a highlight, with expertly crafted tropical drinks that pay homage to tiki classics while also embracing unique, innovative flavors. Our favourite drink: Humble Grass Skirt and Johnny's Bananas shot. They also have a sensational food menu and fire shows. This is one of the classier tiki experiences as far as we're concerned.

And that's our list on America's must try Tiki!
